On June 14 of this year is when I had my most recent run. Coming out of that run, my Achilles ankle was killing me, and I have literally been waiting for it to get better ever since. It is still sore, and I've now engaged the help of the medical community. X rays and MRIs show small tears in the tendon and inflammation, despite not stressing it over the past six weeks. I now start physical therapy this week in an attempt to make things better.
In the meantime, I've been living like a king. Beer has been flowing in great quantities, and way too many meals of dubious caloric benefit have been consumed. As a result, in the period in which I've not been running (or doing anything else for that matter) I've packed on about 10 pounds.
Seriously.
Running has been a huge benefit for me. In fact, in many ways it appears to be the only thing that has been able to keep my weight in check. With it now off the table for the medium term (and perhaps forever?), I need to get my life in order.
I have been biking some, specifically to and from work, but my work schedule has been crazy, and with Mrs. YDP with a broken leg, I need to be able to get home quickly over lunch to take care of her. Hence, I'm going to need to go back to getting up early and getting some kind of workout in before work.
I've been successful the past two days, and have got in an hour bike ride both days. It's great in that it is less stressful on my joints. Unfortunately, I don't get the same kind of workout biking like I do running. Part of that is on me - it is just easier to take things lighter when biking. When taking things light in running, one ends up walking.
I know biking works. My brother is in incredible shape due to biking, and my cousin has found great success in it as well. I need to figure it out.
Stay tuned and I'll keep you updated on progress.
